Abstract

Don Walsh, a pioneering U.S. Navy explorer, passed away at the age of 92. In 1960, Walsh and scientist Jacques Piccard broke the record for human deep submergence by descending nearly seven miles to the ocean's deepest spot. Their historic dive was cloaked in secrecy due to the potential for failure, but they successfully reached the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. Walsh was known for his kindness, expertise, and sense of humor, and he continued to advise other explorers who ventured to the Challenger Deep in subsequent years. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandson. [Extracted from the article]
