Abstract

The article critiques the reactionary tendencies in American cinema, as discussed by Russian director Sergei Eisenstein in 1947. Topics include early American films like The Birth of a Nation (1915), which celebrated the Ku Klux Klan; films such as The Big House (1930) and I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932); and the shift towards more subtle forms of reactionary cinema in later American films like Going My Way (1944), which concealed deeper social issues behind humor and sentimentality.
