Abstract
This article examines the significant but often overlooked influence of Field Marshal Hermann von Boyen, twice Prussian Minister of War (1815–1819 and 1841–1847), on the development of the Prussian military system in the first half of the nineteenth century. Boyen is credited as the chief architect of the Landwehr system and the founder of the concept of the "defence system," a comprehensive framework for peacetime military preparation, mobilisation, and territorial defence that shaped Prussian strategic thought more than the ideas of Carl von Clausewitz during this period. The defence system integrated strategy, organisation, fortification, and tactics, emphasizing the mobilisation of citizen soldiers and provincial defence to delay enemy advances until main forces could concentrate. Boyen also established the professional Ministry of War and a peacetime command structure that endured until 1918, underpinning Prussia’s military administration and defensive planning. Despite his limited recognition as a battlefield commander, Boyen’s organisational and theoretical contributions provided the foundation for Prussia’s military readiness and shaped its defensive posture until the revolutionary changes of 1848.
