Abstract

This article examines the enduring friendship between Lewis Mumford and Erich Fromm, two prominent twentieth-century social critics, through their extensive correspondence. Both men shared a commitment to critiquing modern society, technology, and human destructiveness, while grappling with feelings of isolation and doubts about the impact of their work. Their letters reveal a mutual encouragement to continue writing despite frequent frustrations with public reception and political engagement, highlighting a "community of two" that provided emotional support amid a shared sense of urgency about global crises. The friendship underscores their dedication to speaking truthfully and persistently, even when their warnings seemed unheeded, embodying a commitment to intellectual and ethical responsibility beyond immediate recognition.
