Abstract

This essay explores the complex symbolism and lived experience of islands as sites of repetition, boundaries, exile, and identity, intertwining personal narrative with reflections on geography, language, and law. Central to the text is the 1998 case *Tag Eldin Ramadan Bashir & Others v Secretary of State for the Home Department and Sovereign Base Area Authority*, concerning seventy-five asylum seekers stranded on a British military base in Cyprus, whose legal status highlighted the unique and contested sovereignty of the Sovereign Base Areas and the application of the 1951 Refugee Convention. The author meditates on themes of departure, home, and loss through linguistic and cultural lenses, including Greek and Latin etymologies, colonial imaginaries of islands, and the emotional geography of borders and displacement. The essay also engages with philosophical and literary works on repetition, grief, and difference, framing islands as metaphors for both confinement and transformation. [Extracted from the article]
