Abstract

This essay explores the mobilization of cultural heritage through a case study of Solomon’s Pools / Burak Sulayman in Palestine. The site’s location in occupied territory (Area A), outside of an urban area and increasingly surrounded by Israeli settlements, makes Solomon’s Pools an important and urgent subject. Using the past to claim land in the present has been a key instrument in shaping the state of Israel since its inception and, by extension, Israel’s settler-colonial occupation of Palestine. Archaeology has been a potent source for the Israeli settler-colonial project in Palestinian territory. By analyzing the mobilization of Solomon’s Pools in the context of Israeli settler colonialism, this essay offers a comprehensive understanding of the different layers of contestation and Solomon’s Pools’ contemporary significance. Drawing on three months of fieldwork in the Bethlehem area, participant observation, active interviews, and critical discourse analysis, this essay illuminates the "how" of heritage mobilization, reveals its various practical applications in the context of Israeli settler colonialism and the consequences for Solomon’s Pools.
