Abstract
This article discusses a book by Hugo Coniez that provides a concise political history of the fall of France in 1940 and the dissolution of the Third Republic. The book focuses on the reactions of French actors to the military defeat and national dislocation, rather than analyzing the reasons for the defeat. Coniez argues that the downfall of democracy and the birth of the new authoritarian regime were the result of the decisions of a small number of men and a chain of events, rather than long-term causes. The book also highlights the role of Marshal Pétain in orchestrating the downfall of the Third Republic. Despite some glitches in the book, it offers interesting observations and conclusions.
