Abstract

Yapi Merkezi Holdings AS, a Turkish firm, has signed a deal to build a railway line in Uganda after China withdrew its support for the project. The 272-kilometer track will connect Uganda's capital, Kampala, to the border with Kenya. The railway is expected to cut cargo transport costs in half and provide Uganda with an alternative to trucking for access to the port in Mombasa. The project had been delayed and was originally expected to cost $2.3 billion. The African Development Bank has been in talks with Uganda about arranging syndicated loans for the new line.
