Abstract

The article details how American Society of Cinematographers member Tobias Schliessler combined prison dramas and classic Technicolor musicals to create two distinct looks for the film adaptation of Manuel Puig's 1976 novel "Kiss of the Spider Woman," directed by Bill Condon. Topics include the film being the seventh collaboration of Schliessler with Condon, the crime dramas used by Schliessler for references, lighting and stage effects and the general approach to the musical scenes.
