Abstract

The article discusses the history of The Players, an actors' social club launched by stage actor Edwin Booth in New York City in 1888. Topics discussed include the management of the club's library and art collection on Gramercy Park through the non-profit adjunct The Players Foundation for Theatre Education, the club's Pipe Night which is an annual tradition wherein members smoke long-stemmed churchwarden pipes, and the preservation of the apartment where Booth lived until his death in 1893.
