Abstract
This article focuses on comparing two nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) methods for quantifying plasma creatinine—an important biomarker for kidney function—with a standard enzymatic assay used in clinical practice. The study evaluated a conventional NMR method based on Nuclear Over Hauser Enhancement Spectroscopy (NOESY) and an advanced method based on J-resolved spectroscopy (JRES) using 649 outpatient plasma samples. Results showed that the advanced JRES-based NMR method had a higher correlation (r = 0.94) and lower imprecision (coefficient of variation 6.79%) compared to the conventional NOESY-based method (r = 0.71, CV 12.08%), aligning more closely with the enzymatic reference method (CV 4.57%). The authors recommend the advanced NMR quantification method for creatinine measurement and suggest it as a step toward integrating NMR techniques into routine patient care.
