Abstract

This article focuses on the life and legacy of Ed Stone, the longtime leader of NASA's Voyager program, who died at age 88 in June 2024. Stone oversaw the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 missions, launched in 1977, which explored the outer planets and their moons, discovering dozens of new moons, rings, and geological phenomena, and continue to send data from interstellar space. Under Stone's leadership, Voyager 2 remains the only spacecraft to have visited Uranus and Neptune. Stone also served as director of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and contributed to multiple space missions, but he is best known for guiding the Voyagers through their historic planetary tour and beyond.
