Abstract

The article examines Ghana's historical struggle against corruption, highlighting its significance in the context of the country's democratic evolution over the past 30 years. Following the December 2024 elections, which saw a peaceful transition of power to John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), concerns about economic conditions and corruption emerged as key voter issues. The article traces the roots of corruption in Ghana from the precolonial Asante empire through various political regimes, including the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah and Jerry John Rawlings, illustrating how corruption has been a persistent challenge despite efforts to combat it. It concludes by noting the ongoing public demand for accountability and the establishment of independent institutions aimed at addressing corruption in contemporary Ghana.
