Abstract

The article reviews Susan C. I. Grunewald's monograph, *From Incarceration to Repatriation: German Prisoners of War in the Soviet Union*, which provides a comprehensive examination of German prisoners of war (POWs) during and after World War II. Grunewald utilizes a range of Russian- and German-language sources to explore the experiences of German POWs, their forced labor contributions to Soviet postwar reconstruction, and the political dynamics surrounding their repatriation. The book highlights the evolution of POW treatment from initial neglect to improved conditions due to their economic value, as well as the ideological efforts to reeducate them within the context of Cold War politics. Additionally, it discusses the commemoration of German POWs in the post-Soviet era, reflecting changing narratives and the complexities of memory in contemporary Russia. [Extracted from the article]
