Abstract

The article focuses on the complex history of Congo’s transition from Belgian colonial rule to independence, centering on the life and political rise of Patrice Lumumba, the country’s first prime minister. It details Belgium’s exploitative colonial legacy under King Leopold II, which included brutal forced labor and minimal investment in education, and how Lumumba’s exposure to pan-Africanism and independence movements transformed him into a militant nationalist. The narrative highlights Cold War dynamics, including U.S. and Belgian efforts to undermine Lumumba due to fears of Soviet influence and control over Congo’s vast mineral wealth, culminating in his arrest and assassination with CIA involvement. The article also discusses the broader African and African American cultural and political connections to Congo’s struggle, as depicted in the documentary *Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat*.
