Abstract
The article focuses on the arrival and resettlement of Vietnamese "boat people" refugees in Australia following the communist takeover of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos in 1975. The first group of five men arrived by boat in Darwin in April 1976, marking the beginning of a decade during which about 94,000 Indochinese refugees were resettled in Australia, with only a minority arriving by sea under perilous conditions. The Australian government, led by Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, developed its first refugee policy in 1977 to manage the humanitarian crisis, resettling over 50,000 refugees and instituting legislation in 1980 to deter unauthorized boat arrivals. Despite facing racial discrimination, these refugees and their descendants became an integral part of Australia's multicultural society. [Extracted from the article]
