Abstract
This essay offers a look into the formation of queer modernism and aesthetics in Soviet Russia. Topics discussed include the artistic and intellectual influences of Sergei Diaghilev, Dmitry Filosofov, Konstantin Somov in the establishment of Modernism, illustrations by Léon Bakst which featured androgynous figures that resonated the idea of Greece as a utopia of sexual freedom, and the connection of painter Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin to Russian avant-garde and the queer underground.
