Abstract

This article focuses on a musical program by the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra that imaginatively traces an early 18th-century journey from Hapsburg Further Austria to Berlin, the capital of the Holy Roman Kingdom of Prussia. The program features historically contextualized Baroque compositions by composers such as Johann Caspar Fischer, Johann Christoph Pez, Johann Sigismund Kusser, Johann Ludwig Bach, Telemann, and J.S. Bach, performed on period instruments. The recording, made in concert at the orchestra’s home base in Rastatt, highlights balanced sound and expressive interpretation, guided by flutist and musicologist Martin Bail. The accompanying booklet situates the music within its geographic and historical setting, emphasizing the continuity of travel routes and regional landscapes in southwestern Germany.
