Abstract

Zhongping Chen's article in Diplomatic History delves into the rivalry between Chinese reformers and revolutionaries in diasporic communities in North America around the turn of the twentieth century. The narrative focuses on grassroots diplomacy and the mobilization efforts of Chinese political activists among male diasporic elites in North American Chinatowns. Chen employs a network approach to highlight the interconnectedness between reformers and revolutionaries, challenging the notion of starkly separate camps. While the study admirably aims to shift the focus from celebrity figures like Kang Youwei and Sun Yat-sen to diasporic Chinese activists, the narrative occasionally gets sidetracked by the allure of these prominent figures.
