Abstract

Against the Carceral Archive examines the state's "carceral archival project," which is rooted in negative perceptions of Blackness and shapes the existence of civil subjects. The author, drawing on the experiences of liberation activists, particularly from the Black Panther Party and the Coalition Against Police Abuse, emphasizes the significance of studying and planning in organizing against state violence. The book critiques how state structures, including the legal system and media, perpetuate a narrative that categorizes individuals based on their perceived value to society, often marginalizing Black communities. Through archival research, the author highlights the importance of Black knowledge and communal practices in resisting oppressive state mechanisms and advocates for a deeper understanding of the intersections between state violence and environmental issues.
