Abstract

This discussion might have been particularly welcome as a complement to that of Marxist historians from below, who have stressed the unfairness and venality of the official authorities and social hierarchies against which pirates rebelled. Historians including Mark Hanna have examined this problem in relation to the flexible definition of "piracy", but Wilson, with his detailed analysis of anti-piracy interests, would have had more to offer on this count.
