Abstract
The article focuses on Julius Schulhoff’s piano transcription of the Largo cantabile from Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 93 in D major, one of Haydn’s twelve “London” Symphonies completed in 1791. Schulhoff (1825–1898), a Prague-born pianist and composer who toured Europe under Chopin’s patronage before settling in Berlin, created a transcription noted for its pianistic imagination and fidelity to Haydn’s original notation. Published by the Viennese firm Spina, the transcription was part of a collection dedicated to Madame Betty Schott, a prominent figure in 19th-century music circles. The article also compares Schulhoff’s version to other contemporary transcriptions, highlighting the absence in all of a distinctive bassoon “fortissimo” moment near the movement’s end.
