Abstract

The article focuses on a recording of Girolamo Frescobaldi's *Fiori Musicali*, a collection of organ masses composed for the Catholic Mass and published in 1635. The three masses—intended for the Madonna, the Apostles, and regular Sunday services—feature music aligned with specific parts of the liturgy, including the Kyrie performed in an alternation between organ and four baritone singers. Organist Richard Lester's interpretation on a 1983 William Drake organ in St John's Church, Totnes, England, is noted for its sensitivity and expressive capture of the music's spiritual and theatrical elements, particularly during the "elevation toccata." The recording includes detailed notes and additional ricercars available online, though these bonus tracks were not included on the CD due to time constraints.
