Abstract
This article discusses the collapse of Protestant radicalism in Ulster following the 1798 Rebellion and the subsequent revival of radicalism in the region. It focuses on the figure of William Sharman Crawford, an Anglican landowner who became a leading figure in the radical movement in the 19th century. Crawford campaigned for parliamentary reform, social reform, and agrarian reform, and his ideas continued to influence Ulster liberalism and Irish land reform. Despite setbacks and divisions, his legacy persisted as a minority strand in Ulster politics and laid the foundation for the recovery of a liberal-radical alternative in Northern Ireland from the 1960s.
