Abstract

This article explores the ideological and historical dimensions of the crusades in east central Europe, focusing on the complex interplay between missionary efforts, military conquest, and the expansion of Latin Christendom. It examines the transformation of peaceful missions into armed campaigns against remnant European pagan tribes. Drawing on primary sources, the study underscores how local conflicts were framed within the broader crusading movement and how the Christianisation of Prussia, Livonia, and Estonia reshaped the religious and political landscape of the Baltic region. The analysis contextualises the integration of east central Europe into Latin Christendom as part of a broader strategy of territorial consolidation, religious transformation, and the establishment of new ecclesiastical structures.
