Abstract
H.A. Guízar's book, "The École Royale Militaire: Noble Education, Institutional Innovation, and Royal Charity, 1750–1788," provides a comprehensive account of the Parisian École Royale Militaire (ERM). Guízar argues that the school should be seen as an Enlightenment project, influenced by French philosophes and part of a broader culture of improvement and reform. The ERM aimed to improve the French army by providing professional training for students and to rehabilitate the French nobility by offering education and assistance to young men from noble families. Despite facing criticisms and challenges, the ERM was historically significant and contributed to the modernization of education in France. Guízar's book also sheds light on the French nobility, the culture of improvement and reform, and political struggles in 18th-century France. [Extracted from the article]
