Abstract

Activists from Greenpeace International have boarded a ship conducting deep sea mining research in the Pacific Ocean, protesting against the potential harm to deep sea ecosystems. The Metals Company (TMC), the expedition's backer, plans to apply to become the first venture licensed for deep sea mining in international waters. However, regulations governing deep sea mining have not yet been adopted by the International Seabed Authority (ISA), with some member countries calling for a moratorium. TMC argues that deep sea mining is less environmentally and socially destructive than terrestrial mining. Greenpeace has also asked the Port of Long Beach to block a ship transporting nodules collected during a test mining operation, citing potential health risks. [Extracted from the article]
