Abstract

The article focuses on Russia's largest barrage of loitering munitions, specifically Shahed-131/136 drones, launched overnight at Ukraine as Kyiv prepares to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor, a 1932-1933 famine recognized by 28 countries and three international organizations as a genocide orchestrated by Soviet leader Josef Stalin. Ukraine's air defense intercepted most of the drones and a Russian Kh-59 cruise missile, but the attacks caused power outages, property damage, and injuries in Kyiv and surrounding regions. Ukrainian officials and the US ambassador to Ukraine condemned the attacks, linking them to the ongoing conflict and the symbolic timing of the commemoration. Russia denies the famine was man-made, attributing it instead to drought.
