Abstract
The article focuses on the increasing adoption of nature-based solutions, such as floodable parks and green roofs, to mitigate the impacts of catastrophic floods in urban areas across Europe and Asia. It highlights recent deadly floods in countries including Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, and Spain, noting that traditional hard engineering infrastructure often exacerbates flooding by rapidly channeling water without absorption. Experts emphasize that nature-based approaches can better manage floodwaters by creating sponge-like urban environments, offering additional benefits like drought resilience, biodiversity, and recreational spaces. While these solutions present challenges such as space constraints and potential trade-offs, they are generally more cost-effective and valuable than conventional gray infrastructure when co-benefits are considered.
