Abstract

This article focuses on Alessandro Deljavan’s recording of piano pieces by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (CPE Bach), examining how these works, originally composed for clavichord and harpsichord, translate to the modern piano. The review compares Deljavan’s interpretations—characterized as impulsive and fast—with those of other pianists such as Ana-Marija Markovina, Marc-André Hamelin, and Mikhail Pletnev, noting that Markovina and Hamelin offer more coherent and emotionally nuanced performances. The article also highlights the challenges of conveying the expressivity and volatility of CPE Bach’s music on modern instruments, suggesting that performances on period instruments like clavichords provide greater clarity and musical sense.
