Abstract

The article focuses on Charlemagne (c.742–814), King of the Franks and first Holy Roman Emperor, who united much of Europe for the first time since the fall of Rome. It details his military campaigns, including the prolonged Saxon wars, the conquest of the Lombard kingdom after the nine-month Siege of Pavia (773–774), and his expansion into Spain and Bavaria, which established the foundations of the Carolingian Empire. Charlemagne’s coronation by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day 800 symbolized the revival of imperial authority in Western Europe and the alliance between the Frankish kingdom and the papacy. The article also highlights his cultural and administrative reforms, his promotion of Christianity, and the lasting legacy of his empire, which influenced European history for centuries.
