Abstract
The article "The Economic Contribution of Montana's Hard Rock Mining Industry" by Patrick M. Barkey and Derek Sheehan explores the significant impact of hard rock mining on Montana's economy. The study, sponsored by the Montana Mining Association, analyzes the jobs, wages, production, vendor purchases, tax payments, and other economic flows generated by the industry. In 2021, Montana's hard rock mining industry employed 2,646 people and produced minerals with a market value of almost $1.6 billion, primarily copper and palladium. The industry's economic contributions include supporting over 18,000 jobs, generating $1.3 billion in annual income, contributing $427.9 million in tax and non-tax revenues, and adding nearly 26,000 people to Montana's population. The analysis highlights the industry's high productivity, significant tax payments, and value-added nature of mining production. [Extracted from the article]
