Abstract

The article traces the remarkable journey of journalist John Boyle O'Reilly from Fenian convict and daring escapee to one of the most influential journalists in 19th century U.S. Topics include the global Fenian movement and penal transportation, O'Reilly's escape from Australia and role in the Catalpa rescue, and his impact on Irish nationalism through journalism at the news papers "The Wild Goose," "The Catalpa" and "The Pilot."
