Abstract

'From I Frankenstein i to I The Last Man i , [Mary] Shelley constructs a world in which God's voice is either absent or actively ill-intentioned towards his creations' (41). In the comprehensive study I Religion Around Mary Shelley i , Airey traces the intricate methods by which Shelley presents a difficult relationship with God in her literary productions. Airey reveals the potential historical influences for Beatrice, a prophet, and argues that 'Shelley uses the story of Beatrice to develop a multifaceted criticism of religious culture' (100).
