Abstract
The article focuses on Richard Hawkins's exhibition "The Garden of Loved Ones" at Hong Kong's Empty Gallery, which explores themes of desire and cultural appropriation through the lens of Tatsumi Hijikata, the founder of Butoh dance. The exhibition features a range of artworks, including the striking sculpture "Head of a Dancer" (2025), which presents a decapitated head of Hijikata, and collages that juxtapose Western modernist figures with quotes from Japanese writer Yukio Mishima. Hawkins's work reflects a complex interplay of fascination and critique regarding Orientalism and cross-cultural dynamics, inviting viewers to navigate a labyrinth of narratives that challenge conventional understandings of love and desire. The exhibition ultimately raises questions about the nature of artistic obsession and the boundaries of cultural representation. [Extracted from the article]
