Abstract
The Treaty entered into force on 9 February 1991, 30 days after Indonesia notified Australia of having completed the internal requirements for the entry into force of the Treaty. Established a complex provisional arrangement mechanism when Indonesia and Australia were unable to achieve significant progress in their continental shelf boundary negotiation. 1. On 11 December 1989, the Indonesian Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade signed a treaty of historic significance regarding the mutual understanding to establish a Zone of Cooperation to explore and exploit the resources in the overlapping area claimed by Indonesia and Australia known as the Timor Gap. Upon the integration of East Timor to Indonesia in 1976, Indonesia and Australia commenced the continental shelf boundary negotiation in 1979 for the Timor Gap segment. [Extracted from the article]
