Abstract
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is facing a major financial scandal within his ruling Liberal Democratic Party. He is expected to announce the firing of four cabinet ministers who are accused of concealing income from fundraising events. The scandal has drawn comparisons to a previous scandal in the late 1980s that led to the downfall of then-Prime Minister Noboru Takeshita. The scandal threatens Kishida's policy program and has caused a decline in his popularity. The party may replace Kishida with another lawmaker, and potential candidates include Shigeru Ishiba, Taro Kono, Shinjiro Koizumi, and Yoko Kamikawa. [Extracted from the article]
