Abstract
This article focuses on the album *Kyma*, featuring flute sonatas by composers Francis Poulenc, Peter Mieg, and Constantinos Stylianou, performed by Hungarian flutist Janos Balint and Cypriot Greek pianist Nicolas Costantinou. It details Poulenc’s Flute Sonata (1956–57) and Mieg’s Sonata in C (1963), highlighting their historical contexts and performances, as well as Stylianou’s large four-movement sonata composed in 2021, noted for its consonant harmonic language and distinct style. The performers’ backgrounds and recording history are outlined, along with commentary on the album’s presentation, which contrasts modern graphic design with music that diverges from typical modernist styles. The article emphasizes the diversity of compositional approaches to the flute sonata form represented on this recording. [Extracted from the article]
