Abstract

The article "A new hieratic ostrakon from Lachish" reports on the discovery of a fragmentary ostrakon in Lachish. The ostrakon dates back to the early 18th Dynasty and contains a list of Canaanite names and associated supplies. The discovery provides important clues about early writing practices and Egyptian involvement in the area in the 15th century BC. There are uncertain readings and alternative suggestions for the various lines of the ostrakon, but it remains unclear what exactly they mean. The Lachish ostrakon is the earliest example of hieratic script in Lachish and Canaan, and it demonstrates an established Egyptian writing practice. [Extracted from the article]
