Abstract

This study examines the relationship between technical and tactical key performance indicators (KPIs) and running activities in sub-elite senior male rugby union players, focusing on positional roles (backs, forwards, and scrum halves). Using data from 36 players in the Italian Top10 league, the research found that tactical roles distinctly influence running patterns: tackling is primarily associated with impacts and decelerations, while ball carrying relates to impacts and accelerations. Additionally, a higher percentage of missed tackles correlates with increased acceleration events, suggesting complex defensive dynamics. These findings highlight the importance of integrating tactical context and positional differences when designing training programs for sub-elite rugby players.
