Abstract

The article traces how Jesuit missionaries such as Matteo Ricci and Alfonso Vagnone introduced Aristotelian ideas of the soul and hylomorphism into China, adapting concepts of matter, form, and causality to engage with Confucian and Buddhist traditions. Topics includes early catechisms presenting the soul–body relation, translations and adaptations of Aristotelian natural philosophy, and the negotiation between European scholasticism and Chinese intellectual frameworks.
