Abstract
This article focuses on research conducted by Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, examining how specific video game mechanics, particularly "stun" effects, contribute to psychological need frustration in players. The study tested a custom video game with four stun conditions—No Stuns, Avoidable Stuns, Unavoidable Stuns, and Layered Stuns—and found that Unavoidable Stuns significantly increased players' autonomy need frustration, which is linked to reduced engagement and wellbeing.
