Abstract

The article discusses the naval confrontation known as The Glorious First of June in 1794 between Britain and France. Both sides claimed victory as they sailed away from a brutal battle satisfied that they had done their duty. The British fleet, led by Lord Howe, emerged victorious, capturing and sinking several French ships, despite heavy casualties on both sides. The French, however, could also claim a form of victory as their sacrifice allowed a desperately needed convoy to slip past the British blockade. [Extracted from the article]
