Abstract

"We Hereby Refuse: Japanese American Resistance to Wartime Incarceration" is a graphic narrative that explores the experiences of three Japanese Americans who were forcibly removed and incarcerated in Japanese American incarceration camps during World War II. The book highlights early examples of Japanese American resistance and showcases the diverse visions of what resistance looks like. The artwork in the book emphasizes the constant negotiation with the state that Japanese Americans faced during their incarceration. The book also examines the role of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) and its historical stance on assimilation. Overall, "We Hereby Refuse" offers a personal and political perspective on this history and invites further examination of civil liberties in the US. [Extracted from the article]
