Abstract
The article focuses on the historical conflict between midwives and surgeons during the early modern period, particularly highlighting the Chamberlen family's efforts to reform childbirth practices through the invention of forceps. Doctor Peter Chamberlen's attempts to establish a Corporation of London Midwives faced resistance from the College of Physicians and midwives, leading to a protracted struggle for recognition and authority in obstetrics. The Chamberlen family, originally Huguenot refugees, sought to improve childbirth safety but faced challenges in promoting their innovative forceps, which ultimately became a significant tool in midwifery. Despite their reluctance to share their invention, the forceps eventually gained acceptance, although many lives were lost during the century it remained a secret. [Extracted from the article]
