Abstract

The article explores the history and future of airport design, from the haphazard beginnings of tents and sheds to the iconic modernist designs of Eero Saarinen, Richard Rogers, Renzo Piano and Norman Foster. While some architects have withdrawn from designing airports due to their impact on the environment, passenger numbers are predicted to double in the next 20 years.
