Abstract

This work analyzes the multifaceted concept of pity in the novels of Victor Hugo, focusing on its linguistic, metaphysical, ethical, and social dimensions. It explores Hugo's nuanced use of "pity," highlighting its dual nature as both compassionate and vengeful, and its role in reconciling human will with divine mercy. The study also examines Hugo's critique of false religiosity, his integration of pity with political and moral values such as justice, equality, and freedom, and his warning against selfish or superficial expressions of pity. Ultimately, the analysis presents pity as a central, morally significant emotion in Hugo's thought, linked to Christian roots and oriented toward socialism and humanism as a means of fostering understanding and connection among people.
