Abstract

The article discusses the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance archival research on the American Civil War. Topics explored include the availability of technological innovations designed to improve historical research, the capabilities of generative AI in terms of data transcription, annotation, and interpretation of 19th century handwritten texts, and the historical knowledge required by generative AI models to support primary source analysis.
