Abstract
This article focuses on Maximilian Carl Gritzner, a mid-19th-century Austrian-born mechanical engineer, artist, and US Coast Survey draftsman whose work documented the Gulf Coast, particularly Mobile Bay, Alabama. Gritzner created rare historic sketches of a Choctaw winter encampment near Mobile and contributed detailed hydrographic charts that improved navigation and commerce in the region. After participating in the 1848 European revolutions and emigrating to the United States, he worked on coastal surveys before returning to Europe, where he co-founded a successful sewing machine manufacturing company. His artistic and scientific contributions remain valuable records of Native American life and coastal mapping in the Gulf Coast area. [Extracted from the article]
