Abstract

Estonia's parliament passed a law requiring the local branch of the Russian Orthodox Church to cut ties with its Moscow leadership due to concerns about Russian influence. This move follows Estonia's support for Ukraine and a law passed last August banning institutions linked to the Russian Orthodox Church. The law, which still needs the president's signature, could strain relations with Russia, as a significant portion of Estonia's population is ethnic Russian and Orthodox Christian. The church has expressed opposition to the law, citing religious freedom concerns and proposing compromises. [Extracted from the article]
